It's been two months since I have posted on behalf of the Virgil Fox Legacy, but we've been pretty busy! If you would like to read my recap of the 25th Anniversary Memorial Events, go to http://www.VirgilFoxLegacy.com. While you're there, note that Len has posted an article from "Choir & Organ" (a UK publication) that has just been received. I'm very proud of this particular article, because I think it represents exactly what I believe about Virgil and his career. Also, it nicely promotes things that relate to the Virgil Fox Legacy. We do get many orders for recordings from the UK, and this is a beautiful publication, filled with full color (whoops, colour) photos. I think we should all subscribe to "Choir & Organ" for a more colourful viewpoint about organs! (www.choirandorgan.com)

We have not posted a new master class tape yet, because the last two tapes have not been digitized, but soon they will be available. Also, we are planning to put out an MP3 CD compilation of them to satisfy the many who have asked. We have what we think is a better set of tapes than we have used for the past two years, so will let you know when they are ready and up - and where you can buy them if you wish.

For the Retrospective afternoon at The Riverside Church, we asked Michael Barone of American Public Media's "Pipedreams" to moderate, and of course we offered him an honorarium and expenses. He has refused to accept remuneration or payment from Anchor-International Foundation, and instead thanked us for a wonderful opportunity to be part of something meaningful to him. As a result, I think it only fitting that when the MP3 CD is produced, it is dedicated to Michael and his program, which also gave us much-needed radio and web coverage just two weeks before the events. Most of the master class tapes have been hosted by generous sponsors over the past two years, and Michael's contribution has been outstanding; plus he was a wonderful host for the Retrospective.

At the moment, we are out of two of the OrganArts Legacy Series releases: Volume I, Girard College Chapel; and Volume III, Great Protestant Hymns. We will be reordering them shortly (it's a matter of needing about $4,000 to do so), and then we'll have an ample supply again. I estimate that they will be ready by the end of November, as will be The Bach Gamut, Volume 2. Sorry that we have gotten a bit behind with our releases, but it's a matter of cash flow and necessary concentration on the New York events.

T. Ernest Nichols made an exciting impression during his presentation at Trinity Church, Wall Street during the discussion sessions, and many have cheered his new book, "The Innermost Secrets," which is subtitled "The Method Behind the Madness." Finally, someone who studied with Virgil, and who taught to others what he learned from the master, has detailed the background of Virgil's technique, and provided clear, and amusing, instructions of how to play the organ like Virgil Fox! Speaking of books, the hard cover, Second Edition (fourth printing), of "Virgil Fox (The Dish)" will be shipped in mid-November. It contains a 13-page index, a list of all photos, and a CD of Ted Alan Worth playing the 113-rank, four-manual Aeolian-Skinner (1963) organ at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville. We are undertaking a publicity campaign to get the book reviewed by major newspapers in the U.S., which can only be done because it is now released in hard cover. It is available through http://www.SeeMusicDVD.com - or, we hope, at your local bookstore, because now it is distributed by Forte Distribution, which is also distributing our CD and CD/DVD albums.

Len Levasseur and I are on our way to Russia, both St. Petersburg and Moscow, where Frederick Swann is playing concerts as part of the Moscow Philharmonic International Organ Festival. November isn't my idea of the right time to visit Russia, where I lived from 1992 to 1999, but this is a unique opportunity - and Fred might not have gone without us!

Holy Trinity’s Bach Vespers series has been an institution since 1968 and

has recently been named “A Cultural Landmark” by the New York Landmarks

Conservancy. The Bach choir and instrumentalists present Bach’s

works in the context for which they were written, using period instruments

in performance.

The bus will leave the Hartford area in the early afternoon and return at

Scholarship for High School Students (posted 9-1-05)

In 2006 the Charlotte Hoyt Bagnall Scholarship for Church Musicians will hold a competition for high scahool musicians. Up to fifteen hundreddollars ($1,500) will be awarded based on the judgment of a panel of prominent church musicians from Connecticut. High school students studying piano or organ with an interest in church music are eligible to apply. The scholarship can be used for a variety of music studies including:

􀁹 Organ lessons

􀁹 High school and college level studies related to organ or religious music

􀁹 Participation in organ festivals, seminars, music camps, etc. The scholarship was established in 1995 by the First Church of Christ, Simsbury, Conn. Mrs. Bagnall, a graduate of the Hartt College of Music, served First Church of Christ, Simsbury as organist for twenty-five years prior to her death in 1994. Her dedication to her position as organist was an expression of her own deep faith and her belief in the importance of music as an expression of faith in worship. From her own experience and as an active member of the American Guild of Organists, she was aware of the reducing numbers of college trained organists. She knew that churches were finding it difficult to recruit skilled organists for their music ministries. It seemed appropriate at her death that a scholarship be established in her name to encourage young musicians interested in church music. Since 1995, twenty 20 scholarships and special awards have been granted. The scholarship eligibility differs between odd and even years. On even numbered years the scholarship is limited to high school age musicians and on odd numbered years the scholarship is open to musicians of all ages providing they have completed their junior year in high school.

The season begins with Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass with full orchestra and follows with Dvorak’s Mass in D (Feb. 2006), Mozart’s Vespers, (May 2006) and culminates with GMC’s First Annual “Down by the Riverside” Summer Music concert in July 2006. Somewhere in your library is a great piece of music: accesible to the average choir, enjoyable to sing and hear, effective in the context of worship, an anthem "tried and true." Each participant should bring multiple copies of the anthem for the group to sightsing as he/she presents the music at the piano. Observers are also welcome. Everyone will receive a list of ordering information for the anthems presented. Refreshments and social time will follow.

Earth Mass at Warner Theatre (Event 10-8-05)

I am writing with regards to an exciting Joyful Noise, Inc. production of The Earth Mass/Missa Gaia, Directed by Paul Halley, on October 8th, 8 pm, at the Warner Theatre in Torrington.

The Earth Mass was written in 1981 by Paul Winter, Paul Halley (director of Joyful Noise) and Jim Scott - with important contributions by Brazilian composer Oscar Castro-Neves, and Kim Oler - for a Mother's Day premier at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City. It was written in celebration of (Mother) Earth and Nature, and in true Paul Winter Consort style, blends classical, jazz, gospel, and folk traditions with the rhythms of Africa and Brazil, while also incorporating a great range of voices and instruments - human and otherwise. This is music that truly spans times, cultures, and species, effectively uniting them together while allowing each its own distinct voice. In the words of wren, harp seals, a flight of loons, and singing humpback whales."

The Earth Mass promises to be a massive and inspiring event, featuring Joyful Noise's choirs Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, our favorite gospel-jazz singer Theresa Thomason, the exciting and proficient Nick Halley Band, and the ethereal voices of wolf, whale, and loon. It is my hope that you will be able to join us for this wonderful and unusual concert.

NATIONAL COMPETITION FOR YOUNG ORGANISTS

September 9 -11, 2005

First Church of Christ in Wethersfield, Connecticut is pleased to host the Eighth Annual Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival / USA this coming September 9 – 11, 2005

Opening Celebration Concert w Friday, September 9 w 7:30 p.m.

On Friday evening, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. the festival will open with a concert featuring three internationally-known concert organists: Frederick Hohman, from South Bend, Indiana; Katherine Pardee from London, England; and Benjamin Dobey from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A pre-concert dinner buffet will be offered at The Village Tavern (corner of Marsh and Main Streets in Wethersfield) at a cost of $15. per person. Organ Competition w Saturday, September 10
9:00 – 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday, September 10 the High School Division competition will be held from 9:00 to 12:00 noon in the church’s historic Meetinghouse. High School Division finalists are: Samuel Kohei Gaskin from Beaumont, Texas; Kenneth Scott Miller from Conover, North Carolina and Jacob Michael Street from North Reading, Massachusetts.

The College/Young Professional Division competition will be held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Finalists in this division are: Monica Alexandra Harper from Waco, Texas; Scott A. Montgomery from Champaign, Illinois; and Jason Noel Roberts from Morristown, New Jersey.

Winners’ Recitals w Sunday, September 11 w 4:00 p.m.

On Sunday, September 11, at 4:00 p.m. the First-Prize Winners in both divisions will present a concert in the Meetinghouse of First Church. The First-Place College/Young Professional Award is provided by Patrick J. Murphy Associates, Inc. Organ Builders. The First-Place High School Division Award will be provided by Ahlborn–Galanti Organs.

All are welcome to attend any or all of the events!

The public is welcome to experience these musical events on all three days of the festival. An offering will be received on Friday evening and on Sunday afternoon. Childcare will be available on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon for those under the age of 8. The First Church of Christ is located at 250 Main Street in Old Wethersfield. Exit 26, just off I-91.
